ChatGPT Ads is not the first ad inside AI

The news is true, but it is not new

On 24 August 2026, ChatGPT Ads opens in 31 European countries, Sweden among them. That is a genuine piece of news, and most coverage frames it as the moment advertising moved into AI. The framing is off by more than a year.

Google has shown ads in AI Overviews, the summary at the top of the results page, since 2025. In AI Mode, the conversational search experience, sponsored results appear in roughly one answer in four. Measured by reach, Google is not only first but still by far the largest ad surface inside AI-generated answers. OpenAI began its US pilot in February this year.

The distinction matters for a reason that is uncomfortably concrete: one of these surfaces requires you to build something new, and the other does not.

You are probably advertising in AI already

Google's ads in AI answers are bought through the ordinary Google Ads account. There is no separate product to order and no active decision to make. So if you run search advertising today, your ads may already have appeared inside AI-generated answers, without anyone on your side choosing it and without it featuring in any presentation.

That makes the first action fairly undramatic. Before budgeting for a new platform, it is worth finding out where you already appear. It is a reporting question, it costs nothing, and it determines whether ChatGPT Ads is an addition or your first step into AI placements. Most people who ask the question discover they were already there.

The largest ad surface in AI requires no new platform. It sits in the account you already have.

The category is not a law of nature

There is a story going around that ads inevitably work their way into every AI assistant, much as they worked their way into every feed. Two companies have already departed from that curve.

Perplexity launched ads in late 2024, paused after less than a year, and wound the effort down entirely in February 2026, citing user trust. Anthropic keeps Claude ad-free as a stated position. Meanwhile Google's own Gemini app was still ad-free in August 2026, even though the company has told advertisers that this will change.

The pattern is commercial rather than technical. Ads turn up where there is a large free tier to fund, not where the revenue already comes from subscriptions. Accordingly, ChatGPT Ads are shown only to people on the free version or Go, not to paying users. Worth keeping in mind when someone says you have to be everywhere: some of these surfaces will never exist.

What is actually worth doing now

New is not the same as worth funding. We judge AI placements like any other channel, which in practice comes down to three questions.

Is the buying intent where your customers are? You already reach Google's AI surfaces, so there the question is measurement rather than fresh money. ChatGPT Ads is untested in Sweden, and at launch buying runs through OpenAI's sales team or partners, with self-serve promised later in the quarter. That argues for a contained test budget with a stated learning goal, not for redistributing the media plan.

Can you measure what the click leads to? An ad inside a conversation leaves a weaker trail than an ad in a list of results. Without conversion tracking that holds up, the evaluation becomes a feeling, and a feeling is not a basis for decisions.

Does the margin cover the price? The surface is new enough in Sweden that there is no settled price picture to compare against. That in itself argues for starting small and measuring carefully.

We never promise a particular return in advance, least of all on a surface that is days old in this market. But not knowing where you already appear is a worse position than opting out deliberately. What AI advertising actually means walks through the surfaces one by one, and how we work with advertising is there if you want someone to look at your account.
